Audio Dictation Modes

Sidekick supports three modes for recording audio: Auto-note, Smart Dictation, and Direct Dictation. The features of each mode are outlined in the table below. Please note, it is possible to start/stop and move between dictation modes during a patient encounter. To switch modes, you must pause the one that is currently active.

Use case |
Used to record the conversation between the patient and provider. Auto-Note will interpret the conversation and will populate appropriate sections of the note based on the relevant information gathered. |
The user talks directly to the computer and says what they want to get added into the note. Smart-Dictation will clean up their phrasing and will categorize and improve the ordering of the statements appropriately. | This feature is designed to help you dictate anywhere inside your EMR that there is a free text box. Please note, you must click into the text box to dictate into it. |
Sections to be generated |
Auto-note will generate content to the following sections of your EMR: subjective, objective (text box), plan, assessment, and (functional) goals. Please note, the auto-populated sections may vary slightly by EMR. |
Smart Dictation will generate content to the following sections of your EMR: subjective, objective (text box), plan, assessment, and (functional) goals. Please note, the auto-populated sections may vary slightly by EMR. |
Direct dictation will capture audio only inside of free text boxes. You must be clicked into the text box of choice for this to work. |
Content generation |
Auto-Note will create and populate suggestions into the note as extrapolated from the captured conversation. It will use predictive algorithms in the interest of creating a more compliant and concise note for the user. |
Smart Dictation focuses exclusively on the specific points addressed in the recording but may rephrase the input you provide. |
Adds the exact phrases the user dictates. |
Templated statements |
More likely to include templated phrases such as “The patient would benefit from physical therapy to improve…” in the Assessment section of the note. |
Less likely to include templated phrases evaluated for compliance unless explicitly dictated. |
Will not include templated phrases evaluated for compliance unless explicitly dictated. |
Goals |
For initial evaluations, Sidekick will attempt to generate goals based on the content of the conversation. |
Will not write goals unless they are specifically dictated. |
Will not write goals unless they are specifically dictated. |
Uses existing patient info? |
Depending on the EMR, Sidekick will read patient name, age, diagnosis, and laterality data from the screen. This functionality is currently available in WebPT SOAP1 and in Prompt. |
Will not read any data from the screen. |
Will not read any data from the screen. |
Long vs. short recordings |
Better for longer recordings that include lots of conversation (i.e. initial evaluations). |
Better for shorter recordings and for inputting targeted objective data. |
Better for shorter recordings and adding interventions or specific text within a free text box. |
